The more the brown spots accumulate, the darker the image becomes and the more apparent is starting to show up through them. But fear not! There are plenty of fixes for your projector's brown spot problems out there if you're willing to do a little research and put in some elbow grease.

Here are three ways we like to fix brown spot problems on projectors:

1) Clean Your Projector's Screening Filter

This may seem like an easy fix, but did you know that screen filters can actually get stained with dust? If this is what happened with your projector's screen filter, then cleaning it will be simple enough.

 Use a small, damp sponge or cloth and wipe away the dust and stains as best you can. And make sure that you're using a soft material like a sponge or cloth, because you don't want to scratch your projector's screen!

2) Replace The Screening Filter

If the cleaning process above didn't work, the next step is replacing your screening filter. If your projector's light source is strong enough, it can be melted by an over-aggressive cleaning substance such as Windex or window cleaner. If this happens to you, just replace the filter and try again with a cleaner like alcohol.

1) Make sure that your room is cool. A projector needs enough ventilation and should not be in an enclosed space like a closed office or closet.

2) Make sure that there is nothing blocking the airflow around the projector's vents or fan blades.

3) Clean the air filter according to instructions provided by your maker(Sony Projector Screens). The filter should be cleaned at least once every two months.

4) Replace the lamp if you notice that the color of your picture is off. Or, if you notice that there is a flickering effect after several hours of use.

5) Unplug everything from the back of your projector and then turn it on to see if it will work at all. If it does not turn on, replace all internal bulbs/thermal fuse(most manufacturers have lamps rated for about 1000 hours before needing replacement).

The newest projectors have smart sensors that will shut themselves down when they detect overheating problems — but this does not mean that your screen will be damaged from one time of overheating — just follow sanitary practices to avoid future problems.

The first step is to identify the defect and try to isolate it. To do this, you'll want to set up your projector in a dark room that is preferably as close to pitch black as possible.

The next step is determining which surface of the lens may be causing the issue. Get a flashlight and shine it towards the lens from various different angles; if one angle reveals or causes a change in the brown spot, that's probably where your problem lies.

Finally, you'll need some sort of solvent or liquid that can remove whatever dirt or debris may be stuck there. It'll probably take some trial and error, but if you find something that works, make sure to clean the rest of the lens so that it doesn't happen again.

In the case of my projector, I tested the lens from several different angles to see if I could replicate the brown spot on one side or another.

The best solution for me was to simply wipe down the affected area with a microfiber cloth. It's also important to note that this is not a permanent fix; more than likely after some time, especially with regular use of your projector, you will have this issue again.
